I first came across John after watching the films Stripes and National Lampoon's Vacation in the early '80's. It was obvious that he was a major comic talent... to be proved in later films such as Splash, Uncle Buck, The Great Outdoors, Cool Runnings and of course Trains, Planes and Automobiles, where his portrayal of shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith, a man hiding immense heartache and loneliness behind a front of bravura and wisecracks remains one of the most underrated screen performances ever.
In an increasingly materialistic world, it's gratifying to read that no-one has a bad word to say about John, and there is not even a whiff of scandal about him either, remarkable in an industry noted for it.
Next Wednesday, 4th March, it's 21 years since John left us. Where has the time gone? The world became a sadder, greyer place with his passing.
RIP John, I'm sure you're still making 'em laugh up there. You truly were one of life's Genuine Good Guys. |

I just got done watching Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I've been a John Candy fan since I was a kid. As you sit and watch his movies you realize how clean his comedy was compared to today's. I think that says volumes about how good he really was. He is still missed by tons of people. His comedy and films are truly timeless. I miss you big guy. Thanks for the memories. |

Rest in peace, man. You were a phenomenal actor and seemed like a marvelous person. Your laughter was contagious and your humor got me in hysterics when I thought a smile was unattainable. The world became a little bit gloomier without you. |

Dear Mr. Candy,
Even though I haven't known you for a very long time, I've come to love you very, very much. Being the big Disney fan that I am, I first found out about you by watching "The Rescuers Down Under", and not only did I love the film, I loved you as Wilbur the albatross! What a wonderful character...Next was "Planes, Trains, and Automobiles", and boy, what an emotional rollercoaster that was! I laughed my butt off, felt sad at times, but most of all, I discovered just how fantastic of an actor you were. I'm now finding more about you and your film career and personal life every day(just watched "Uncle Buck" for the first time last night!), and what a wonderful person you were. There was nobody else like you-anywhere at all. I really wish I could have met you..I'm very sad that I never will and that you're gone, but I'm happy that you were around in the first place. You only live once, but if you do right, I guess once is enough. I hope you're having a good time in comedian heaven.
Thank you for being truly scrumptious, and for making life a little sweeter.
"Our heart beats so unruly,
because we love you, truly,
Honest, truly, we do."
I love you,
Emily |

Was just watching a video clip of a policeman singing and jigging about while driving his car and it brought back memories of John doing exactly the same thing in Trains, Planes and Automobiles.. What a great film that was, one of my all time favourites!.... What a loss for John to have left us so early!.......... |
